​How Mulch Coloring Equipment Can Give You an Advantage in Sustainability

Sustainability is one of the biggest trends in the corporate world right now. Companies are adopting environmentally friendly practices because they believe in it, their customers are demanding it and it makes good business sense.

For colored mulch producers, mulch coloring equipment can make a big difference when it comes to sustainability.

If the final weight is lower, more material can be shipped per truck. That can reduce the number of trips needed to haul product, as well as fuel consumption. In addition to being environmentally friendly, this could potentially lower maintenance and labor costs.


Here's how big of an advantage BASF mulch coloring systems can make: 

  • Water savings:  A competitive machine may use 15 gallons of water per cubic yard, resulting in a water weight of 125 pounds, compared with a BASF system using 7.5 gallons per cubic yard or less and a water weight of 62.5 pounds.
  • Transportation cost savings: If a skid carries 60 bags (4.45 cubic yards), the mulch colored by BASF equipment will weigh 278 pounds less per skid. For an average truck that holds 16 skids of mulch, that would equal a savings of 4,448 pounds per truckload. That's enough to get two more skids of material on a truck — and some customers fit up to four more skids.
  • Fuel savings: The average producer of bagged colored mulch will ship between 2,600 and 4,320 truckloads per year. Using the same calculations in the example above, they could see a reduction of 312 to 518 truckloads per year, or 12 percent, by using BASF mulch coloring equipment. Based on an average of 65 miles per load in a truck that gets 6.5 miles per gallon, that's a savings of 10 gallons of diesel fuel per load, or 3,120 to 5,180 gallons per year. 
  • Emissions reduction: Taking all those trucks off the road would also lower the emissions going into the air and give the company a friendlier carbon footprint.
